How it Works

Four easy ways to leave anonymous Crime Stoppers tips!

Online WebTips

Tipsters now have the option of giving us tips online. The process is completely secure and anonymous and is a very effective and efficient means of safely communicating with us in today's world. Our WebTip process is powered by the world's leading online tip solution provider, Anderson Software.

The very unique integrated Two-Way Dialog capabilties allow the tipster to come back and provide additional information to their tip at any time, but also provides a secure means for the coordinator to ask questions or provide reward information back to the tipster through the same secure and encrypted interface. Tipsters can also download pictures and video relevant to the tip.

Text Message Tips

Tipsters now have the option of texting us tips through their cell phone. The process is completely secure and anonymous and is a very effective and efficient means of safely communicating with us in today's world.

1 - Text "TIPLA" plus your message" to CRIMES (274637)

2 - Upon reception of a tipster’s first incoming message, the system will auto-reply with a confirmation containing their unique Tip ID.

3 - To submit follow-up information, the tipster simply replies. Nothing else is needed.

4 - All follow-up tips and even your replies from the application are written under the original parent record and shown threaded and date/time stamped in the narrative. The session may be terminated by the tipster texting STOP into the system at any time or by you manually selecting the "Terminate Thread" button from within the application.

Mobile Application Tips

The mobile app for Android and iPhone allows the public to submit anonymous tips with your smart phone. The app offers more powerful options than SMS Text-a-tip, because it has the ability to use GPS to auto-locate the nearest agency or to select an agency manually.  Additionally, users can attach images and video to their tips. It adds additional security by securing all information with a user ID and password.

There is no cost to anyone for use of this application and is free to download at the Android Market or iTunes App Store.

Phone Tips

Calls are received at a Call Center using a toll free number: 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).  All phone lines are encrypted and no phone calls are ever recorded.  Tips are then sent onto LA Crime Stoppers for further evaluation.  By guaranteeing a caller's anonymity, Crime Stoppers allows the caller to provide information without fear of retaliation.  By offering cash rewards for information that leads to an arrest or criminal filing, the program encourages otherwise reluctant callers to provide information.

For Emergencies or Crimes in Progress: DIAL 911!

Crime Stoppers is not for emergencies or crimes in progress. DIAL 911 for emergencies/crimes in progress. If you are the victim of a crime, you must report the crime to your local law enforcement agency.

About Anonymity

Crime Stoppers uses state of the art encryption technology to ensure Crime Stoppers tips stay anonymous. Phone numbers, IP addresses, etc. are not traceable. For tips to stay anonymous, tipsters must not divulge any personal identifying information within the content of their tips.

Two-Way Communication

All Crime Stoppers tips (except for phone tips) feature Two-Way Dialogue capability. This enables tipsters to return at their convenience, securely upload images, add additional information to their original tip, and communicate back and forth with tip intake personnel. Tipsters should follow-up periodically to answer any new questions that may have been posted.

The Crime Stoppers program is funded by private donations and annual fund raising events. NO TAX DOLLARS are involved. The reward money paid out by the program is from the fund raising and donations from concerned citizens and businesses.

Crime Stoppers board members meet on a monthly basis along with members of law enforcement to evaluate arrests and to decide on the size of rewards of up to $1000. Reward evaluation is based upon arrest, not conviction. Although eligible tipsters can receive rewards of up to $1,000, many tipsters choose not to collect their rewards.

If a reward is approved, a two-way communication will be sent to the tipster. Rewards must be collected within 30 days of the initiation of the communication. It is the tipster’s responsibility to follow-up periodically by logging in with their tip number/password to check the tip status should they desire a reward.

 Collecting Anonymously

LA Regional Crime Stoppers has partnered with Nix Financial to enable authorized tipsters to ANONYMOUSLY collect approved rewards. Through the program, tipsters selected to receive rewards will be directed to one of 12 Nix Financial branch outlets throughout Los Angeles County, where a secure system has been set up for them to receive their payout.
